Budgit: Only 10 States Publish Accessible LGA Budgets

BudgIT says only 10 states in Nigeria currently provide publicly accessible budget data for local government areas. The civil society organisation’s report shows that six states publish partial or outdated information, while many others do not make any data available.

The report notes that although local government budgets are prepared and funded across the country, most are not accessible online. It explains that local councils receive allocations from the federation account, but transparency at that level remains limited.

According to BudgIT, states like Ekiti, Cross River and Borno stand out for publishing detailed and accessible local government budget records. Other states such as Ebonyi, Osun, Kebbi, Kogi, Enugu, Kaduna and Yobe also provide some level of budget information.

The organisation says more than half of the states do not publish any local government budget documents, stressing that the main challenge is a lack of public access rather than availability.
