Nine soldiers and one police officer have been killed in an ambush by armed gunmen in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The attack occurred on Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community, where security operatives were reportedly targeted while responding to a tip-off about the presence of armed men at a construction company yard.
Eyewitnesses say soldiers deployed to secure the area were ambushed along the way, and two military trucks were set ablaze during the incident. Some residents, who spoke anonymously, described the scene as chaotic, with fears that additional casualties may have occurred, while military authorities have yet to issue an official statement.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the attack on Wednesday after visiting the mortuary and the accident and emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, where victims were taken. He described the incident as barbaric, pledged that the state government would cover medical bills of the injured, and promised support for the families of the deceased.
