Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, the platform on which he contested the 2023 presidential election. The former defence minister announced his decision in a statement on Sunday, saying it takes immediate effect.
Kwankwaso, who served as the party’s national leader, described the move as difficult and expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve. He thanked the leadership and members of the party across all levels for their support during his time.
He explained that the current political climate influenced his decision, noting the need for a strategic realignment. Kwankwaso said he intends to align with another political platform that offers a better chance to impact the nation’s direction.
