The Nigeria Democratic Congress has intensified efforts to bring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a message shared on social media on Sunday, the party signalled a narrow two-week window for both politicians to defect and secure its presidential ticket before the primary deadline.
The outreach comes amid growing political alignment efforts between supporters of the two figures. Recent days saw the launch of the OK Movement, an initiative aimed at building momentum for a possible joint ticket. The group has since announced its leadership structure spanning national, zonal, and state levels, indicating a coordinated push toward the next election cycle.
Developments within the African Democratic Congress have also added urgency to the situation. The party is currently facing an internal leadership dispute that could affect its readiness for the 2027 polls. The Supreme Court recently reserved judgment in a case involving competing claims to the party’s leadership, leaving uncertainty over its immediate future.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has set May 30, 2026, as the deadline for submission of party membership registers and nomination of candidates. Opposition parties have called for an extension of the timetable to allow more time for primaries, arguing that the current schedule places them at a disadvantage as preparations for the election continue.
