DR Congo declares holiday after World Cup qualification

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has declared April 1, 2026, a national public holiday to celebrate its qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The announcement was made by the country’s Ministry of Labour following the national team’s victory earlier on Wednesday.

The Leopards secured their place at the tournament after defeating Jamaica in an intercontinental playoff, marking their first World Cup appearance in 52 years. Their last qualification came in 1974 when the country competed as Zaire.

In a statement, the government said the paid holiday reflects the directive of President Félix Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka to allow citizens to celebrate in unity and national pride.

DR Congo had earlier progressed to the playoff after defeating Nigeria’s Super Eagles on penalties in November 2025. A subsequent petition by the Nigeria Football Federation to FIFA over player eligibility was dismissed, clearing the way for the country’s qualification.
