Fresh concerns over rising insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt have emerged following a deadly attack in Benue State that has left at least 17 people dead. The incident occurred in the Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area, where armed assailants reportedly struck on Saturday evening.
The attack began at about 5pm and lasted for several hours, with homes and properties destroyed in the process. Local reports indicate that the assailants moved through the area during the assault, heightening fears among residents already on edge due to previous threats.
Police authorities in Benue State have confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Udeme Edet stating that investigations are ongoing. Security alerts had earlier warned of armed groups moving across parts of the state ahead of Easter gatherings, raising concerns about coordinated attacks.
