El Rufai raises alarm over alleged plot to implicate him

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El Rufai, has raised concerns over what he describes as a fresh plot to implicate him in criminal activities. In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, Malam Nasir El Rufai alleged a coordinated effort aimed at damaging his reputation and keeping him in prolonged detention.

Malam Nasir El Rufai recalled that he was allegedly targeted for arrest on February 12, 2026, upon his arrival at the Abuja Airport from Cairo. He added that he later honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16, after which he was detained and subsequently transferred to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on February 18.

The former governor’s latest concern follows a report by The Nation newspaper alleging that gunmen invaded the residence of a principal witness, Mohammed Umar Karage, in an ongoing case before the Kaduna State High Court. The report suggested that the incident might be linked to the witness’s role in the trial, an allegation Malam Nasir El Rufai has strongly denied.

Malam Nasir El Rufai maintained that he has no connection to the alleged incident and described the claims as an attempt to tarnish his image and influence ongoing legal proceedings. Muyiwa Adekeye said the former governor has instructed his legal team to initiate defamation proceedings, while also calling for respect for due process and the rule of law.
