The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before a Federal High Court in Abuja against six people accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu. The defendants include a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector and three others.
They are accused of waging war against Nigeria and committing offences bordering on treason and terrorism. The charges follow investigations into an alleged coup plot uncovered by military authorities.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed in January 2026 that some military personnel were involved in plans to remove the government. Several officers were arrested in October 2025, while others were declared at large.

Families of some detained suspects have since called for an open trial and access to their relatives, staging protests in Abuja earlier this month to demand a speedy judicial process.
