Resident Doctors Suspend Planned Strike, Set May Review

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has suspended its planned nationwide strike following renewed assurances from the federal government on key welfare issues. The decision was taken during an emergency virtual meeting of its national executive council held on April twenty five, after reviewing recent engagements with senior government officials and relevant agencies.

The association said it noted progress on several of its demands, including the reversal of the earlier halt in the implementation of the reviewed professional allowance table. The doctors expect the new structure to reflect in April’s salaries and continue in subsequent payments. The government has also restated its commitment to clearing outstanding promotion and salary arrears owed to resident doctors across affected institutions.

Further developments include initial approval for the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund and indications that payment of long-standing professional allowance arrears will begin soon. However, the association expressed concern over delays affecting some categories of doctors, particularly house officers, whose salaries remain unpaid in some cases.

Despite these concerns, the association resolved to suspend the proposed indefinite strike while monitoring the situation. It says progress on the agreed terms will be reviewed at its next ordinary general meeting scheduled to be held in May in Kano, where further decisions may be taken based on the government’s level of compliance.
