Sowore Rejects Opposition Summit, Calls for New Political Direction

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election, has declined an invitation to attend the National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The activist and publisher said his decision was based on concerns that the gathering represented an attempt by established political actors to reposition themselves without addressing past governance failures.

The summit, which brought together several opposition parties, ended with a resolution to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. Among the parties involved were factions of the African Democratic Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the New Nigeria People’s Party, all seeking a united front ahead of the polls.

Sowore argued that many of the figures involved in the alliance had previously held positions of power during periods he described as marked by stagnation and systemic challenges. He maintained that Nigerians are politically aware and unlikely to support what he sees as a rebranding effort by familiar political actors.

He also stated that the African Action Congress would not join any coalition formed under such circumstances. Instead, Sowore said the party plans to mobilise nationwide support for what he described as a people-driven alternative, focused on accountability, integrity, and a clear departure from both ruling and opposition establishments.
