Lagos governor endorses deputy for governorship race

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election in Lagos. The announcement was made on Monday after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House in Marina.

The governor said the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council. He described the endorsement as unanimous, adding that Hamzat had formally indicated his intention to contest the position.

Sanwo-Olu said his deputy was qualified for the role, citing his experience and their working relationship over the past seven years. He praised Hamzat’s integrity, loyalty and commitment to governance.

The governor also acknowledged the role of Bola Tinubu in shaping their political careers, stating that party leaders were aligned in supporting Hamzat’s bid ahead of the 2027 election.
