NiDCOM Warns of Rising Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission says xenophobic attacks in South Africa are worsening, with Nigerians and other African migrants facing increasing threats. The warning was issued in a statement on Tuesday by the Commission’s Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

NiDCOM said reports indicate that many Nigerians are living in fear, with some unable to attend school or open businesses due to the risk of violence, looting and harassment. It added that fresh incidents have been recorded in the past 72 hours.

The commission urged South African authorities to take immediate steps to protect Nigerians, increase security in affected areas, and prosecute those responsible. It also rejected the stereotyping of Nigerians, stressing that crime should not be linked to nationality.
