Oprah Winfrey to close South Africa girls' academy in 2027

Oprah Winfrey is to close her leadership academy for girls in South Africa at the end of the 2027 academic year, ending nearly two decades of residential education at the school. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls opened in 2007 and has provided education for academically gifted girls from disadvantaged communities.

Under the transition plan, the campus will be handed over to the Gauteng Department of Education, while students currently enrolled will complete their education, with the remaining pupils to receive support for continued schooling.

Winfrey says her commitment to educating young women in South Africa will continue through an expanded scholarship programme designed to reach more girls across the country. The academy’s website is currently accepting applications for the 2027 academic year, consistent with the announced timetable for the final cohort.
