The Nigerian Catchball Federation says it has withdrawn the country from a forthcoming international competition in South Africa over renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Africans. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Lagos by the federation’s spokesperson, Naomi Nnaji.
The federation said the decision was taken in the interest of the safety and welfare of players and officials who were scheduled to participate in the tournament. It added that the security of its members remains a top priority.
The withdrawal follows reports of fresh violence against foreign nationals in South Africa, including the killing of two Nigerians earlier in the month, according to the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg.
