Nigerians awaiting evacuation from South Africa have staged a protest at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria over delays in the government’s repatriation programme.
The demonstration comes days after the Federal Government assured citizens that no Nigerian willing to return home would be abandoned ahead of a June 30 deadline set by anti-migrant groups for undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa.
Speaking during the protest on Monday, the President of the Nigerian Community in South Africa, Smart Nwobu, said only one evacuation flight had departed, while the second batch, initially scheduled for June 15, had yet to take place. He said many registered returnees had been left stranded and were facing worsening living conditions.
The Federal Government had earlier repatriated 258 Nigerians and announced plans for four additional flights. Protesters are now calling on authorities to complete the evacuation process and airlift all registered citizens before the end of June.
