Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. They obtained their membership cards at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja after a decision that was sealed following a unanimous endorsement by stakeholders. The move represents a major realignment of opposition forces in the country.
Habibu Mohammed, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement, said the former governor and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate decided on the move to the NDC due to lingering uncertainty within their former party. He explained that stakeholders gathered on Friday at Mr Kwankwaso’s residence to weigh their options and ultimately voted with one voice on the decision.

Mr Obi has consistently demanded the zoning of the presidential ticket since joining the ADC last year, arguing that a failure to address equity and power rotation weakens coalitions. Meanwhile, supporters of both politicians launched the “OK Movement” in April to mobilise support for a potential joint ticket in the upcoming elections. Former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson has since welcomed both politicians to the NDC.
