The Bank of Agriculture has unveiled a plan to deploy 2,000 tractors across the country to mechanise up to 1.2 million hectares of farmland each year. The proposal was presented on Tuesday at plenary by the bank’s managing director, Ayo Sotinriade.
Under the plan, members of the House of Representatives would fund 60 percent of the cost of each tractor, which would be stationed in their constituencies for use by local farmers. The initiative is aimed at boosting productivity, creating jobs and addressing food insecurity.
Sotinriade said each tractor could cover up to 600 hectares annually, supported by farming hubs that would provide inputs, irrigation, financing and extension services. He added that the scheme would enable year-round farming and increase yields.

The bank said the programme could help shift Nigeria from subsistence to commercial agriculture, while also supporting livelihoods and reintegrating displaced persons in conflict-affected areas such as Borno and Benue states.
