World record holder Tobi Amusan has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana. The Nigerian athlete finished first in the women’s 100 metres hurdles final on Wednesday at the University of Ghana Stadium with a time of 12.83 seconds.
The victory marks Amusan’s third African title in the event after previous wins in Asaba in 2018 and Mauritius in 2022. Liberia’s Ebony Morrison finished second, while Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo claimed the bronze medal.
In the women’s 100 metres final, Nigeria’s Rosemary Chukwuma won silver after being overtaken near the finish line by Cameroon’s Herverge Etame, who took gold. In the men’s 100 metres, Chidera Ezeakor secured bronze behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana.

Team Nigeria had earlier opened its medal campaign on Tuesday in the women’s discus throw, where Divine Oladipo won silver, and Obiageri Amaechi claimed bronze on the opening day of the championships.
