State Police Must Not Be Controlled by Governors says Danbazau

Former Minister of Interior, retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau, says any plan to establish state police in Nigeria must ensure that the system is not controlled by state governors. He says the arrangement must be strictly professional to prevent abuse.

Dambazau, a former Chief of Army Staff, told the News Agency of Nigeria that state policing could be effective only if it is insulated from political interference. He warned that without proper safeguards, it could be used against political opponents.

He called for strict recruitment standards, vetting, training and national oversight, adding that policing must meet uniform standards across the country. He also stressed the need for discipline, accountability, adequate funding and improved welfare for personnel.

Dambazau, who is Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to China, said insecurity in rural communities and low trust in law enforcement were key reasons some Nigerians are calling for decentralised policing.
