Abia begins reconstruction of 100-bed hospital in Okpuala Ngwa

The Abia State Government has begun the reconstruction of the Okpuala Ngwa General Hospital in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.

Governor Alex Otti performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, saying the project is aimed at restoring quality healthcare services to the community and the wider Abia State. He described the facility as historically significant, noting that it had served the old Eastern Ngwa area in the past but had fallen into disrepair.

Governor Otti expressed displeasure that successive administrations failed to maintain such public health infrastructure, saying the state was now committed to reversing the decline in the health sector. He also disclosed that land allegedly acquired illegally for the hospital project had been recovered by the government.

The Commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche, said the 100-bed hospital would include maternity and surgical wards, diagnostic laboratories, an emergency unit, and other modern medical facilities. He added that several other general hospitals across the state are at various stages of completion.
