The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is severely undermining efforts to contain a new Ebola outbreak.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the situation represents a “catastrophic collision of disease and conflict” in Ituri province, where Ebola cases are rising amid insecurity.
He said at least 10 confirmed deaths and about 220 suspected deaths have been recorded since mid-May, with around 900 suspected cases reported since the outbreak was declared on 15 May 2026.

Tedros warned that the Bundibugyo strain currently spreading has no approved vaccine or treatment, adding that containment depends entirely on humanitarian access, which is being hampered by ongoing clashes, displacement, and attacks on health facilities.
