The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, says logistical, security and operational challenges caused the delays experienced during the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination across parts of Nigeria. The council says disruptions were linked to protests over the abduction of schoolchildren, the death of three officials in a road accident and other operational difficulties.
In a statement on Monday, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, said three officials transporting sensitive examination materials were killed in a crash along the Gombe-Yola highway on 3 June. The council said the incident, combined with security concerns, affected the distribution of examination materials and delayed the start of some papers.
The examination body also said nationwide protests organised by the Nigerian Union of Teachers over the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states disrupted movement in some locations. WAEC added that challenges related to examination preparations and late candidate registration also contributed to the delays.
The council said emergency contingency measures were activated to minimise disruptions and that corrective steps have now been implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of the remaining examinations.
