The Borno State Government has denied reports that ransom was paid to secure the release of 360 abductees rescued from a terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains of southern Borno State.
Speaking in an interview today, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, said the operation was carried out through intelligence gathering and military action, with support from the Department of State Services, DSS.
The rescue was announced on Sunday by Operation Hadin Kai. Its Acting Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Haruna Sani, said Special Forces and troops of Sector 1 conducted the operation after weeks of intelligence gathering, covert reconnaissance and detailed planning. The victims, including men, women and children, had been abducted from communities around the Ngoshe axis.
Tar said there was no evidence of any ransom payment and described the operation as a successful military rescue mission. He added that the state government views Boko Haram as a criminal organisation engaged in terrorising and exploiting civilians, and pledged continued efforts to combat the insurgency.
