Ministry of Transport Confirms Four Deaths in Train Derailment

The Federal Ministry of Transportation says four people, including an infant, died after a train derailed in Agbor, Delta State, on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Funsho Adebiyi, said four coaches capsized, and one coach derailed during the incident. He said the victims were two adult women, one adult man and an infant.

According to the ministry, 442 passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel and service providers were on board, bringing the total number of occupants to 482. Twenty-four people sustained serious injuries and were taken to medical facilities in Agbor for treatment, while an injured Nigeria Railway Corporation staff member is reported to be in stable condition.

The ministry and the Nigeria Railway Corporation have expressed condolences to the families of the victims and confirmed that a full investigation into the cause of the accident has begun. Authorities say efforts are continuing to identify all affected passengers and provide support to victims and their families.
