The Senate has formally dissociated itself from comments attributed to Senator Adams Oshiomhole describing the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, as “a bunch of criminals and thieves”, saying the remarks do not represent the position of the upper legislative chamber.
The resolution was adopted during Thursday’s plenary following a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele. The Senate also stated that no committee has the authority to issue or execute a warrant of arrest without complying with the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act and obtaining the approval of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The development follows reports that the Senate Committee on Public Accounts recommended a warrant of arrest against former NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, over allegations that he failed to honour invitations linked to an inquiry into an alleged unaccounted N210 trillion cited in a report by the Auditor-General of the Federation.

Responding to concerns raised by colleagues, Senator Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North, said his remarks were made under provocation after lawmakers were allegedly denigrated by NNPCL officials. He said he was defending the integrity of the Senate and added that he would apologise if that was the wish of the chamber.
