The Senate has passed for second reading two bills seeking to increase the number of judges in Nigeria’s superior courts to reduce case backlogs and improve the delivery of justice.
The bills, sponsored by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and debated during Wednesday’s plenary, propose raising the number of Federal High Court judges from 70 to 90 and increasing the number of Justices of the Court of Appeal from 70 to 110.
Senator Bamidele said the measures are intended to strengthen the judiciary’s capacity to handle a growing volume of cases, improve access to justice, and enhance the resolution of commercial, corruption and specialised cases. He also said the Court of Appeal bill would ensure broader state and Federal Capital Territory representation and improve the court’s administrative efficiency.

The proposals received unanimous support during debate and were referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative work. The committee is expected to submit its report within four weeks.
