Three police officers have been killed after an improvised explosive device exploded during a clearance operation on the Anka-Bagega road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Security sources quoted by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama said the incident happened at about 5:05 pm on 15 June. The officers were part of a team led by Superintendent of Police Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, the Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, which had been deployed to defuse a suspected explosive device believed to have been planted by bandits.

According to the report, the team, which included personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, was conducting a controlled clearance operation in an armoured personnel carrier when the vehicle triggered the explosive device. SP Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, Inspector Murtala Musa and Inspector Auwal Ahmad were killed in the explosion.

The bodies of the officers were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau for post-mortem examination. Authorities have launched an investigation, while security has been strengthened in the area, and efforts continue to clear the road and prevent further attacks.
