Operation Fansan Yamma troops have foiled an attempted mass abduction in Unguwar Rogo, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, rescuing at least nine civilians, including an infant.
Spokesperson Aliyu Danja said the Sunday attack was likely carried out by fighters loyal to bandit kingpin Mallam Shuaibu, in suspected reprisal after troops arrested seven informants accused of aiding the group, including some involved in funnelling ransom payments through POS agents.
Residents say attackers ambushed commuters from roadside farmland before troops responded to a distress call, though three people were reportedly still taken and two women sustained gunshot wounds.
Troops are continuing operations to track the fleeing attackers.
