The minority caucus in the House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend activities related to the 2027 elections and announce a six-month national security and economic recovery plan.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minority Leader of the House, Fred Agbedi, said the country was facing rising insecurity, kidnappings, killings and economic hardship. He urged the government to prioritise the safety and welfare of Nigerians.
Agbedi described the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in captivity after being abducted with his wife in Katsina State, as a national tragedy. He also called for a special military operation to secure the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State within 72 hours.
The opposition lawmaker also criticised a Federal High Court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to deregister five opposition parties. He alleged that the judgment could restrict political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
