Top seed Abua Canice on Tuesday advanced to the round of 16 of the ongoing 47th Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Tennis Championship after defeating 11th seed Sani Musa in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, while second seed Adeleye Daniel also progressed with a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Sani Inabo Yahaya also booked his place after his opponent retired while trailing 6-0, 3-0.
In the women’s singles, top seed Mohammed Khadijat continued her impressive run with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maxwell Timipre to strengthen her bid for the title, while sixth seed Ogunjobi Success also progressed after defeating wild card entrant Samuel 6-0, 6-3.
Udofia Mary joined Khadijat and Ogunjobi in the race for a place in the quarter finals with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Blessing Otu, while second seed Emmanuel Essien Bright also advanced with a straight sets victory. Elsewhere, Godwin Mary outclassed Benjamin Indifreke 6-1, 6-2, while Bamidele Abosede defeated Ogah Loveth 6-2, 6-2.
More matches are scheduled for Wednesday to conclude the preliminary rounds ahead of Thursday’s quarter-final fixtures.
