IPOB says it has indefinitely suspended its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and removed him as director of Radio Biafra as part of what it describes as efforts to reposition the organisation and strengthen its structure.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Chikadibia Edoziem, head of the Directorate of State, said the decision followed a meeting on June 17 after a review of what it called an intelligence report. The group alleged that the report referenced a meeting involving Kanu and officials of the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency, NIA, in Sokoto prison.
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, said the suspension was also intended to prevent what it described as unauthorised actions and statements being attributed to its leadership. It added that IPOB remains a self-determination movement established by its members and not any individual.
Nnamdi Kanu was sentenced in November 2025 to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges by a federal high court in Abuja. He has since appealed the conviction.
