Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has warned that political propaganda and the spread of fake news on social media are encouraging terrorist groups and worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Friday to mark his 84th birthday, Abdulsalami said the recent death of General Rabe Abubakar and other victims of insecurity should serve as a wake-up call. He urged Nigerians to unite in support of efforts to combat terrorism and other forms of criminality.
The former military ruler said the armed forces and security agencies have remained committed in the fight against terrorism, but stressed that tackling insecurity requires the collective involvement of citizens. He said the growing politicisation of security matters has further complicated efforts to address the challenge.
Abdulsalami called on the government and security agencies to sustain decisive action against criminal groups, while urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and law-abiding. He said his enduring hope is to see a united and peaceful Nigeria handed over to future generations.
