The Lagos State Government says it will demolish all distressed buildings in the Alakija area following Thursday’s building collapse, which claimed nine lives and left 27 others rescued.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the decision during an inspection of the site. He said the collapsed building had previously been marked for demolition, and occupants were asked to leave, but failed to comply. He added that all unsafe buildings, including those beneath high-tension power lines, would be removed to prevent further disasters.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said search, rescue and recovery operations have now been completed at the collapsed building near Alakija Bus Stop in Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency to begin immediate structural integrity assessments of neighbouring buildings and enforce compliance with building regulations across the area.
