Nigeria Ready for Global Transparency Review, says NEITI

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, says Nigeria is fully prepared for the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, EITI, Validation exercise scheduled to begin on July 1. The assurance was given by NEITI Executive Secretary, Hon. Musa Adar, during a consultative forum with civil society in Abuja.

Adar said Nigeria has addressed the corrective actions identified in the previous validation, including improvements in stakeholder engagement, contract disclosure, resource-backed loans, subnational transfers and the transparency of state-owned enterprises. He added that NEITI has worked with government agencies, extractive companies and civil society to ensure all required disclosures meet the 2023 EITI Standard.

The Executive Secretary described the validation as an opportunity to demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance in the extractive sector. He urged civil society organisations and the media to actively monitor the process and contribute to strengthening accountability.

NEITI’s Director of Communications and Stakeholders Management, Dr Obiageli Onuorah, said recent reforms, including a memorandum of understanding with the National Human Rights Commission to protect civic space, have further strengthened Nigeria’s position ahead of the international assessment.
