Floods Kill At Least 13 People In Ghana

At least 13 people have died in Ghana’s capital, Accra, after torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding across parts of West Africa. The Ghanaian government has urged residents to remain indoors or move to higher ground as emergency response efforts continue.

The flooding has also affected communities in Nigeria, Togo and Côte d’Ivoire. Ghanaian President John Mahama said the country recorded 140 millimetres of rainfall, the highest in several years, while authorities blamed poor drainage, clogged gutters and illegal construction on waterways for worsening the impact.

In Nigeria, heavy rain flooded parts of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Abia, Cross River and Delta states, leaving roads impassable, disrupting businesses and damaging homes. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency had earlier warned that above-normal rainfall and severe flooding were likely during this year’s rainy season.

Climate experts say Africa remains one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change despite contributing the least to global greenhouse gas emissions. They are calling for increased adaptation funding to improve drainage systems, strengthen infrastructure and enhance early warning systems across the continent.
