Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu Approves Dredging Of 28 Drainage Channels To Tackle Lagos Floods

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary drainage channels across the state, following flash floods that left major roads submerged and residents furious with the government’s handling of the crisis. Announcing the approval, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, says the recent downpours are an extreme weather event that has overwhelmed the city’s drainage infrastructure.

The flooding shut down major routes, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, and the Lekki-Epe Expressway, stranding commuters after transport operators suspended services and forcing many motorists to abandon their vehicles.

While the state government continues to monitor drainage infrastructure and flood-prone locations closely, Wahab has urged residents to support the government’s flood control efforts by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and waterways, illegal reclamation of wetlands, and construction on drainage alignments, adding that these activities obstruct the free flow of stormwater and worsen flooding during periods of intense rainfall.
