Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, the D’Tigers, defeated Tunisia 84-81 on Thursday in Group C action at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers, being played in Luanda, Angola. It was a tightly contested match. Nigeria led 23-21 after the first quarter, before Tunisia hit back to level things at halftime. The D’Tigers held their nerve in the final period to close it out.
The win also marked a winning debut for new head coach David Fizdale in his first competitive game in charge.
This is the third of five qualifying windows in a process involving sixteen African nations chasing five automatic spots at the 2027 World Cup in Qatar.
Nigeria sits in Group C alongside Guinea, Rwanda and Tunisia, and only the top three teams in each group advance to the second round.
Thursday’s win keeps the D’Tigers firmly in contention as they continue this qualifying window, with games against Guinea on Friday and Rwanda on Sunday.
