Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed his FIFA World Cup career is over, after Portugal’s 1-0 round-of-16 defeat to Spain in Arlington, Texas on Monday.
Speaking after the match, the 41-year-old said he was sad to exit this way but leaves with a clear conscience, having given his best. He said he’ll take time with his family before making any decisions about his international future, ruling out rash calls.
Ronaldo’s World Cup journey began at Germany 2006 and spanned six editions through to 2026, making him the first player in history to score at six different World Cups. He finishes with 27 appearances, second only to Lionel Messi’s 30, and 11 goals, both Portugal records.
Though he never lifted the World Cup trophy, Ronaldo leaves as one of the tournament’s most enduring figures, having already led Portugal to their first major titles: the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League crowns. Portugal manager Roberto MartÃnez also resigned after the exit, insisting his side “didn’t fail.”
