Hamas dissolves its government in Gaza

Hamas announced Monday it has dissolved its government in Gaza and is preparing to transfer power to a UN-backed technocratic committee, part of the US-brokered ceasefire process.

A Hamas official said only technical staff will remain, working under the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, chaired by Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath and based in Cairo. The committee was created in January under a UN Security Council resolution tied to President Trump’s 20-point peace plan.

Hamas did not address disarmament, a central Israeli and US demand. An Israeli official dismissed the move as symbolic “spin,” and Trump’s Board of Peace said it would judge Hamas “by actions, not promises.”

The announcement follows the war triggered by Hamas’s October 2023 attack, which killed about 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 taken hostage.

Israel’s offensive has since killed over 73,000 Palestinians, per Gaza’s health ministry. Fighting has eased since October’s ceasefire but continues; strikes killed five people Monday, and five Israeli soldiers have died in attacks since the truce began.
