Police launch investigation into death of South African World Cup player

South African police are investigating the death of World Cup footballer Jayden Adams, after his body was discovered at a property in Cape Town over the weekend.

The 25-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was found dead in the Schotsche Kloof neighbourhood around 11 a.m. Saturday. Police said Monday they’ve registered an inquest, with no cause of death released and circumstances still under investigation.

Adams died two weeks after helping South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history. He started two of South Africa’s three group matches, including one played a day after his grandmother’s death, but did not feature in the team’s round-of-32 exit to Canada on June 28.

His father, Juanito Adams, told South African broadcaster eNCA the family is awaiting autopsy results and has not yet made funeral arrangements, describing the loss as “untimely” and difficult to process.

Moments of silence were held in Adams’ memory before Saturday’s World Cup quarterfinals between England and Norway, and Argentina and Switzerland. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie urged the public to avoid speculating on the cause of death.
