27 dead in Bangkok’s deadliest fire in 17 years

Most of the victims of a deadly fire at a Bangkok music bar were found trapped in windowless bathrooms where they had apparently sought escape from the flames, authorities said Monday, as investigators work to determine the cause of the Thai capital’s deadliest blaze in 17 years.

The fire tore through the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar late Sunday, killing at least 27 people and leaving 25 hospitalised in critical condition, according to city officials.

Firefighters needed about 30 minutes to bring it under control. By daybreak Monday, forensic officers had cordoned off the site, combing through debris including charred televisions, speakers and an electric guitar for clues, with investigators focused on the ceiling above the performance stage.

The bar’s owner suffered serious injuries and remains in intensive care. In a Facebook statement, the venue apologised and pledged full cooperation with investigators.

At Bangkok’s Institute of Forensic Medicine, grieving families gathered to identify bodies. Among them, Keo Oudone Poungpany, 24, identified his younger brother — the two Laotian migrant workers were on shift at the bar when the fire broke out.
