The Federal Government will conclude its evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa on Wednesday, with a fifth and final Air Peace flight bringing home 315 returnees, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said the flight departs Johannesburg at 1:30 am and is expected to land at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 6:30 am.
With this flight, the government will have evacuated over 600 Nigerians across five missions since the exercise began on June 11, following renewed xenophobic attacks and anti-migrant tensions in parts of South Africa.
Nigerian returnees have described being threatened, looted, or forced to abandon their businesses and belongings. President Tinubu had directed that the evacuation continue until every Nigerian who voluntarily registered and passed screening was safely returned.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad and thanked stakeholders, including the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Air Peace.
