Oyo headmaster kidnapped; criminals demand ₦30 million ransom

A 60-year-old headmaster has been kidnapped in Oyo State, barely a day after the state celebrated the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in a neighbouring local government.

Matthew Kolawale Owoade, headmaster of Nomadic Basic School in Igbojaye, Itesiwaju Local Government Area, was abducted Saturday evening while returning from a visit to his farm in Budo Aare.

His son, Abiola Owoade, said the kidnappers contacted the family using the victim’s phone shortly afterwards, demanding a ₦30 million ransom. His abandoned motorcycle was recovered in a nearby bush the following morning.

Oyo State Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the abduction, saying efforts are underway to rescue him unharmed and arrest the perpetrators.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers’ local secretary, Salami Olukayode, said the union has reported the case to the police and local government authorities. Family, colleagues and residents have appealed to the police, DSS, NSCDC and other security agencies to intervene, coming just days after over 40 pupils and teachers were freed from a 56-day Oriire captivity in the same state.
