Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has partnered with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to enhance electoral transparency and sanitise the National Register of Voters. The collaboration aims to integrate NIMC’s National Identification Number (NIN) database into the voter registration framework.
INEC intends to eliminate duplicate registrations, purge deceased voters, and prevent underage voting across the country.
According to the Chairman of the commission, Joash Amupitan: “Entries belonging to Nigerians who died as far back as 2011 remain on INEC’s records, alongside cases of duplication.”
Amupitan says, “The commission looks forward to leveraging NIMC’s data architecture to progressively clean up the register,” adding that the newly introduced online voter registration is deliberately anchored on the National Identification Number as a verification protocol for a more transparent and continuous voter registration process.
