INEC extends deadline for party candidate submissions

INEC to begin nationwide voter register revalidation April 13

The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the deadline for political parties to submit candidate lists for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections by three days, moving the cutoff from Saturday, July 11 to midnight Tuesday, July 14.

INEC said the extension followed an appeal from the Inter-Party Advisory Council on behalf of parties that couldn’t complete uploading candidates’ names and personal details through the commission’s nomination portal within the original timeline. National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna said the move reflects INEC’s commitment to inclusivity while staying within the law.

The reversal comes after INEC had previously insisted the deadline would not move, despite several parties reporting technical difficulties with the portal.

Not all parties needed the extension: the ruling All Progressives Congress said Saturday it had already completed a 100% upload of its full slate — 471 candidates in total, including the presidential ticket, 109 senatorial candidates and 360 House of Representatives candidates. Spokesperson Felix Morka called the extension “noteworthy” saying that failure to complete the registration reflected the “opposition’s chronic inherent weakness.”

INEC has urged parties still working through the process to use the additional window before the new deadline expires on Tuesday.
