Nigerian troops and police repelled an attempted mass abduction at a school hostel in Monguno, Borno State, early Saturday, rescuing 46 students, though the military says some students were killed by stray gunfire during the operation.
Operation HADIN KAI’s Capt. Mohammed Goni said suspected ISWAP terrorists, aided by suspected collaborators, breached the Federal Government Girls College at around 1:30 am. The facility currently serves as temporary hostel accommodation for Federal Polytechnic Monguno students.
Alert security personnel engaged the attackers immediately, and reinforcements from the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force caused the terrorists to flee without abducting anyone.
All 46 students in the hostel were evacuated to Kinnasara Barracks for medical assessment and were confirmed stable. The military did not disclose how many students died in the crossfire, offering condolences to affected families.
Security agencies have launched an operation to identify the alleged collaborators who facilitated access to the school, while troops continue pursuing the fleeing attackers.
