President Tinubu has approved expanding the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions, alongside recruiting 28,000 additional personnel, in a major restructuring aimed at decentralising command and strengthening security nationwide.
Four new divisional headquarters will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City, each overseeing multiple states. Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga said the changes will improve command and control, strengthen border security, and enable faster military response to emerging threats.
Implementation proceeds in two phases: the 5th, 9th and 10th Divisions by September 2026, and the 83rd Division by December 2026. The expansion builds on other investments, including new equipment and improved troop welfare.
Tinubu commended Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu and reaffirmed his commitment to a fully equipped, motivated Armed Forces.
