At least eleven migrants have died after their boat sank off Tunisia’s coast while attempting to cross to Italy.
Tunisia’s National Guard said Sunday that eleven bodies have now been recovered, with three people still missing. The boat was carrying fifteen people, mostly young, when it sank Friday night, about fourteen nautical miles off the coast near Zarzis.
Only one person survived. He said he had been adrift at sea for forty-eight hours before a commercial vessel rescued him.
Officials say those on board included seven members of one family, and a pregnant woman travelling with her husband. All were from Ben Guerdane, a town near the Libyan border.
Search teams, including the coast guard, military and civil protection units, backed by two helicopters, are continuing to look for the missing.
