The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has overseen the demolition of houses obstructing a major road project in Gishiri, near Katampe in Abuja.
Personally supervising the operation, Mr Wike told the community leader that residents had been given ample notice to vacate. Attempts by some to resist the demolition were met with tear gas as security personnel moved in to restore order.

Addressing journalists, the minister said compensation had been offered but was rejected, leaving the administration with no alternative. A three-month grace period, he added, had also been ignored.
The Gishiri road project, launched in October 2024, is scheduled for completion in May 2025 and is expected to be a key feature of President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary in office. Officials say the development is crucial to improving infrastructure in the capital.
