Adopt 2014 Confab Report On Community Policing, Shekarau Tells Tinubu

Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has urged President Bola Tinubu to implement some of the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference Report on community policing and restructuring.

Speaking in a television programme monitored by Radio Now’s Newsroom, Senator Shekarau advocated for state police and restructuring which, in his own words, allows for a bottom-up structure of government.

While applauding the President and state governors for considering the creation of state police, he said the most effective form of security is one which sees communities take charge of their policing, while the higher levels of government act as a coordinator.

He also said state police cannot be successful without traditional institutions and the involvement of the community.

Senator Shekarau added that at least 50,000 policemen should be recruited annually into the Nigeria Police Force, which sees the force lose about 5,000 officers annually to retirement, death and other factors.
